Metformin Tablets
Metformin is used to treat high blood sugar in conjunction with a healthy diet, regular exercise, and sometimes additional drugs.
Patients with type 2 diabetes use it. Keeping blood sugar levels under control can help avoid kidney damage, blindness, nerve damage, limb loss, and issues with sexual function.
Keeping your diabetes under control may also reduce your chance of having a heart attack or stroke.
Metformin functions by aiding in the restoration of your body’s appropriate reaction to the insulin that is naturally produced by you. Additionally, it lessens the quantity of sugar your stomach and intestines absorb as well as the amount your liver produces.
Warning
Rarely, too much metformin can build up in the body and cause a serious (sometimes fatal) condition called lactic acidosis.
Lactic acidosis is more likely if you are an older adult, if you have kidney or liver disease, dehydration, heart failure, heavy alcohol use, if you have surgery, if you have X-ray or scanning procedures that use iodinated contrast, or if you are using certain drugs.
For some conditions, your doctor may tell you to stop taking this medication for a short time. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more details.
Stop taking this medication and get medical help right away if you have any symptoms of lactic acidosis, such as unusual tiredness, dizziness, severe drowsiness, chills, blue/cold skin, muscle pain, fast/difficult breathing, slow/irregular heartbeat,
Side effects
There may be symptoms including weakness, nausea, vomiting, an upset stomach, diarrhea, or a metallic taste in the mouth.
Notify your pharmacist or doctor right away if any of these side effects persist or worsen. Notify your doctor right away if stomach symptoms reappear later (after taking the same dose for a few days or weeks).
If you experience stomach problems after the first few days of your medication, you may have lactic acidosis.
Recall that your doctor has prescribed this medication because they believe it will benefit you more than it will cause negative side effects. Many users of this medicine report no significant adverse effects.
Usually, metformin does not result in hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar. If this medication is taken with other diabetes medications, low blood sugar may result.
