Treatment for certain mental/emotional illnesses (e.g., depression, panic attacks, OCD, PTSD, social anxiety disorder) may involve the prescription of this medicine.
Premenstrual dysphoric disorder, a severe type of premenstrual syndrome, is another condition for which it is used.
As a medication, sertraline is categorized as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). It functions by assisting in the restoration of serotonin, a natural chemical, in the brain.
How Sertraline HCL is used
Before starting sertraline and each time you get a refill, read the medication guide and, if available, the patient information leaflet issued by your pharmacist. See your physician or pharmacist if you have any questions.
As prescribed by your physician, take this medication orally once a day, preferably in the morning or the evening.
This drug can be taken with or without food in tablet or liquid form.
Typically, food is consumed together with the 25 mg, 50 milligram, and 100 milligram capsules.
You can take the 150 and 200 milligram capsules with or without food. Completely swallow the capsules.
Avoid chewing or crushing the capsules. If you have any inquiries regarding how to completely take the capsule form, ask your doctor.
Before being used, this medication’s liquid form needs to be combined with another liquid.
Use the supplied medicine dropper to properly measure the dosage just before ingesting.
A household spoon may not give you the right dosage, so avoid using one.
Add the dosage to a half-cup (4 ounces/120 milliliters) of water, orange juice, ginger ale, lemon-lime soda, or lemonade.
Never combine this medication with other liquids. It is common and safe for the mixture to appear hazy at times.
Consume the entire combination immediately. Never get a supply ready ahead of time.
